I. Overview
The BS 5308 Part 1 Type 2 XLPE/IS/OS/LSZH/SWA/LSZH Cable is a highly specialized cable designed to meet the demanding requirements of various applications. It is especially suitable for communication and control signal transmission in multiple installation types, with a particular focus on the petrochemical industry.
II. Application
Versatile Signal Transmission
This cable is engineered to carry different types of signals, including analogue, data, and voice signals. These signals can originate from a wide range of transducers such as pressure sensors, proximity detectors, or microphones. Its adaptability makes it a reliable choice for diverse communication and control systems.
Petrochemical Industry Compatibility
In the petrochemical industry, where safety and reliability are of utmost importance, this cable is designed to perform flawlessly. It can withstand the harsh and potentially hazardous environments often found in this industry.
Situations Requiring Mechanical Protection
Part 1 Type 2 cables are specifically designed for applications where a higher level of mechanical protection is necessary. This could be in areas with a risk of physical damage, such as where there is regular movement of equipment or potential impact.
Direct Burial Applications
When direct burial at an appropriate depth is required, this cable is an ideal choice. It is constructed in a way that can endure the conditions underground, such as moisture, pressure, and potential chemical exposure.
Enhanced Signal Security
The individually screened design of the cable provides enhanced signal security. This is crucial for applications where the integrity of the transmitted signals cannot be compromised, such as in sensitive control systems.
III. Characteristics
Rated Voltage
With a rated voltage of Uo/U: 300/500V, this cable is suitable for a wide range of electrical systems. It can effectively transmit power within this voltage range without any risk of electrical breakdown.
Rated Temperature
The cable has a rated temperature range that varies depending on its state. For fixed installations, it can operate in temperatures ranging from - 40ºC to +80ºC. When flexed, the temperature range is from 0ºC to +50ºC. This wide temperature tolerance makes it suitable for both cold and hot environments.
Minimum Bending Radius
Having a minimum bending radius of 12D, the cable can be bent to a certain extent without causing damage to its internal structure. This is important during installation, as it allows for some flexibility in routing the cable.
IV. Construction
Conductor
The cable uses different types of conductors depending on the cross - sectional area. For 0.5mm² - 0.75mm², it employs Class 5 flexible copper conductors, which are highly flexible and suitable for applications where some movement may occur. For 1mm² and above, Class 2 stranded copper conductors are used, providing good conductivity and mechanical strength.
Insulation
The XLPE (Cross - Linked Polyethylene) insulation offers excellent electrical insulation properties. It has a high dielectric strength, which helps in preventing electrical leakage and ensuring efficient signal transmission.
Screening
The individual and overall screen made of Al/PET (Aluminium/Polyester Tape) provides shielding against electromagnetic interference. This is essential for maintaining the integrity of the transmitted signals, especially in environments with high electromagnetic noise.
Drain Wire
The tinned copper drain wire helps in dissipating any electrostatic charges that may build up on the cable, further enhancing its safety and performance.
Inner and Outer Jackets
The inner jacket and the outer sheath are both made of LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) material. In the event of a fire, this material will not release large amounts of smoke or toxic halogens, making it safer for both people and equipment in the vicinity.
Armour
The SWA (Galvanised Steel Wire Armour) provides strong mechanical protection to the cable. It can withstand external forces such as crushing, impact, and abrasion, ensuring the integrity of the cable's internal components.
Sheath Colour
The sheath colour of blue - black helps in easy identification of the cable in a complex installation setup.
In conclusion, the BS 5308 Part 1 Type 2 XLPE/IS/OS/LSZH/SWA/LSZH Cable is a well - designed and highly reliable cable solution for a variety of applications, especially those in the petrochemical industry and other environments where communication and control signal transmission, along with mechanical protection and safety, are crucial.
